Our Homeownership Program offers an affordable path to buying your first home, with guidance and support at every stage. To qualify, you’ll need to meet income and credit requirements, show steady employment, and be ready to partner with us throughout the journey to homeownership.
Depending on your background and eligibility, you may also benefit from specialized initiatives like Advancing Black Homeownership, designed to close racial homeownership gaps and build generational wealth.

Financial Coaching Program
Looking to strengthen your finances and prepare for homeownership? Our Financial Coaching Program offers one-on-one support to help you improve your credit, reduce debt, and build long-term financial stability.
If you’re not quite ready for the Homeownership Program, this is a great first step. To qualify, you’ll need to meet income and credit requirements, and show steady employment.
About Our Homes
Single-Family Detached
Our single-family detached homes are ideal for families seeking privacy and room to grow. Featuring 3 to 5 bedrooms, open layouts, and modern features, they offer comfort, convenience, and lasting stability for first-time buyers.

Multi-Family (Twin Homes and Townhomes)
Our multi-family homes provide an option with shared walls and private entrances. Many of these homes usually 2 to 4 bedrooms, open floor plans, and a design that supports community living.

Low-Interest TruePath Mortgage
Did you know our nonprofit mortgage subsidiary, TCHFH Lending, Inc., offers the TruePath Mortgage product to low- and moderate-income households across the metro? It features affordable monthly payments set at no more than 30% of the borrower's income.

Our partnership with you continues after you close on a home. As a Habitat homeowner, you'll receive maintenance advice, helpful resources, and opportunities to connect with other Habitat homeowners!

How do I get started with the Habitat Homeownership Program?
To begin, you’ll fill out an informational eligibility questionnaire online, which asks about your current address, household size, income, savings, debt, and credit. If you're eligible, you’ll receive an email inviting you to apply for the Homeownership Program through our online portal.
The full Homeownership Program application includes documentation of your income, employment history, credit details, and household demographics. If you submit your application and we need more information, we may request further documentation.
After reviewing your application, we may offer participation in our Financial Coaching Program or connect you with one of our referral partners if you're not yet eligible for the Homeownership Program.

What are the eligibility requirements?
You must:

Be a first-time homebuyer (no prior home ownership within the last 3 years; some exceptions may apply)

Live in the 7-county Twin Cities metro area for at least the last year

Meet income requirements tied to household size

Show credit history - including a minimum credit score of 620+, though scores 580–620 or documenting alternative credit may be accepted

What financial requirements do I need to meet?
There are several financial requirements that must be met for both the Homeownership Program and the Financial Coaching Program. Please see this page for the financial requirements for each program.

How long does the process take from application to move‑in?
Applications for the Homeownership Program are processed within about 30 days. After acceptance to the program, working toward mortgage readiness may take anywhere from 1–2 months up to over a year, depending on your credit score and financial situation. The entire homebuying process may take a year or more.

What types of buying options are available?
We offer two buying tracks for first-time homebuyers:
Option 1: Buy a home that is newly built or refurbished by Twin Cities Habitat.
Option 2: Buy a home on the open market, utilizing our TruePath Mortgage financing option to purchase a home while working with a Realtor of your choosing.

What resources do you have for homeowners who purchased with Habitat?
Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity’s Post-Purchase Program provides ongoing support to homeowners after they’ve moved in. This includes monthly classes on homeownership topics, access to the Habitat Homeowner Resource Hub, community engagement opportunities, and continued communication with Habitat staff. The goal is to help everyone thrive in homeownership.
