Caution Against Scams

Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and Habitat for Humanity International are aware of ongoing scams in which individuals falsely use Habitat’s name and logo to request money or offer fake services.

Please know:

  • We will never demand payment through unsolicited calls, texts, emails, social media messages, or digital ads.

  • We will never ask you to send money through unusual payment methods.

If something feels suspicious, it probably is.

Examples of Reported Scams

Homeowners have reported:

  • Offers of “free” roofing or home repair services

  • Ads claiming 50% off homeowners insurance

  • Letters stating you are delinquent on your mortgage and must send payment immediately

  • Social media ads directing you to non-Habitat websites to “apply” or provide personal information

These scams often appear on platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, and sometimes they even come in the mail. These scams may collect personal information that can lead to identity theft.

Do not respond.
Do not send money.
Do not share personal or financial information.

Important Reminder

Twin Cities Habitat and Habitat for Humanity International do not request sensitive personal or financial information through random ads, social media messages, or unexpected outreach.

Never share:

  • Bank account information
  • Credit card numbers
  • Social Security numbers
  • Online passwords

What To Do If You See or Receive a Scam

If you see a suspicious social media post or ad:

  • Report it directly to the platform (for example, Facebook).
  • You may also contact us, so we can alert Habitat for Humanity International.

If you receive a suspicious email:

  • Do not click links or download attachments.
  • Mark the message as spam with your email provider.

If you receive a suspicious letter:

  • Do not send money.
  • Contact us directly to verify.

If you may have shared personal or financial information:

  • Contact your bank or credit card company immediately.
  • Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit through the Better Business Bureau or a credit reporting agency.
